Consultant Recherche chez Smals depuis mai 2013. Vandy était auparavant Professeur Assistant à l’ULB, où il enseignait les langages de programmation. Il a obtenu une thèse de doctorat dans la même institution en 2007.

Il s’est depuis spécialisé dans les techniques de Data Science, incluant le “(social) network analytics”, le “data quality”, le “GIS analytics”, le “machine learning”, en particulier dans le domaine de la détection de la fraude.

Katy Fokou

Consultante Recherche chez Smals depuis mai 2018, spécialisée en intelligence artificielle et plus particulièrement en machine learning et Natural Language Processing.

Joachim Ganseman

Joachim Ganseman is informaticus en heeft een verleden als doctoraatsstudent aan de Universiteit Antwerpen, met zijsprongen naar Queen Mary University in London en Stanford University, waarbij hij focuste op digitale signaalverwerking en analyse van audio. Sinds 2018 werkt hij bij Smals Research waar hij zich concentreert op AI-gerelateerde onderwerpen – o.a. machine learning, natural language processing, data science – en hun mogelijke toepassingen in overheidscontext. Naast het werk is hij een uitstekend pianist, en als medestichter en -organisator van de Belgische Informatica-olympiade ontving hij in 2016 de jaarprijs wetenschapscommunicatie van de Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor Wetenschappen van België.

Pierre Leleux

Pierre est un consultant recherche chez Smals. Diplômé en Ingénieur de Gestion à UCLouvain, il y a obtenu son Ph.D. en 2023. Il est spécialisé en machine learning, plus précisément en analyse de graphe.

Fabien A. P. Petitcolas

Fabien A. P. Petitcolas is research consultant at Smals where he focuses on security topics. Before joining Smals, Fabien was with OneSpan and Microsoft where he took various roles. Fabien graduated from École Centrale, Lyon and then completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge under the guidance of Prof. Ross J. Anderson FRS FREng. List of publications below and here.

Paul Stijfhals

Werkt sinds april 1989 bij Smals. Introduceerde als researcher verschillende nieuwe technologieën binnen de domeinen BI, archivering, collaboration & document management. Sinds 1994 Teamleader Research Department.

Koen Vanderkimpen

Koen is ir. Computerwetenschappen en werkt sinds april 2010 bij Smals als Consultant Onderzoek.
Hij is geïnteresseerd in Cloud technologie, applicatie-ontwikkeling in het algemeen, en toepassingen van AI in software engineering. Hij is ook verantwoordelijk voor het onderzoekslabo.

Bert Vanhalst

Bert is sinds 2001 research consultant bij Onderzoek Smals. Na het introduceren van Service Oriented Architecture en web services, verlegde hij de focus op mobile development en security. Vervolgens richtte hij zich op sterke (mobiele) authenticatie en conversationele interfaces. Tegenwoordig spitst hij zich toe op het nuttig inzetten van (generatieve) AI.

Kristof Verslype

Kristof obtained a PhD in engineering sciences at the KU Leuven with research on cryptographic protection of privacy with zero-knowledge proofs. In this context, he won the best paper award at the International Conference on Security and Cryptography (SECRYPT).

In 2011, he joined the research department of Smals, an IT service provider for the Belgian public sector. His current domains are privacy-enhancing technologies, post-quantum cryptography, crypto-agility and advanced identifier pseudonymisation. Kristof frequently gives talks about these topics and is author of several books on blockchain.

In 2024, he was nominated for the Privacy Professional Award by Belgium’s Cyber Security Coalition. In 2025 the Blinded Pseudonymization Service he co-developed for Belgium’s eHealth-platform received the runner-up (2nd) Award issued by Cybersec Europe for Best Cybersecurity Innovation Europe.
